DESCRIPTION

This project is located in Chengguang Christian Church, Guanze County, Fujian Province, on the southeast coast of China. It is located on a hillside in the center of the old town of the county. It was considered the tallest building in the area at the time. The introduction of Christianity to the coastal areas of Fujian can be traced back to the mid-19th century, and was initially introduced by foreign missionaries. They established churches, schools and hospitals in the coastal areas of Fujian, dedicated to promoting Christian faith, disseminating cultural knowledge and providing social services.
Fuzhou's church culture is an important part of its rich and colorful urban culture. It carries historical memory, cultural traditions and social responsibilities, and also makes positive contributions to the city's cultural development and social progress.
Every aspect of the project’s chapel design is imbued with symbolism, enriching the worship experience and deepening spiritual understanding. The cruciform floor plan echoes the shape of the cross, serving as a visual reminder of Christ's sacrifice and redemption. Clear glass windows seem to depict an immaculate spirit, while exquisite woodwork and statues provide tangible expressions of faith and devotion.
Zheng Guoyong said that at its core, church design is about creating sacred space - a place where heaven and earth meet, where individuals can encounter the sacred and connect with each other in shared faith and community. It’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about shaping an environment that nourishes the soul, inspires the spirit, and fosters the bonds of love and fellowship that are at the heart of the Christian faith. The design of a Christian church is a multifaceted endeavor that encompasses both practical and symbolic aspects. From the grand cathedrals of Europe to the humble churches in rural communities, Christian church designs reflect the beliefs, traditions and desires of believers.
Considering the importance of sound in worship, the suspended ceiling adopts a "T" shaped ceiling and is made of white aluminum veneer, which makes the temple not only bright but also improves the acoustic effect. Special sound-absorbing materials are used on the walls and double arched cloisters make the overall space magnificent yet solemn and sacred.
In addition to worship spaces, the church often includes fellowship, education, and outreach areas. Fellowship halls, classrooms, and meeting rooms provide space for congregational activities, social gatherings, and community service, fostering a sense of belonging and connection among members.
Zheng Guoyong said that Christian church design is a fusion of art, theology and practicality, aiming to create a sacred space where worshipers can encounter gods, deepen their faith and participate in the life of the believer community. Every element of a church design contributes to the overall atmosphere and spiritual meaning of the space, inviting worshipers to experience God’s presence and love more deeply.
Equally a beacon of faith and community, Christ Church is set in a tranquil landscape and is a timeless testament to the enduring power of faith and community. The church's majestic spire points straight to the sky, and its elegant appearance welcomes all who come, embodying the values of reverence, tolerance and service.
Zheng Guoyong seamlessly blends traditional elements with contemporary sensibilities to create a space that is both timeless and relevant. Made from local stone, the façade exudes a sense of solidity and timelessness, while intricate details and elegant arches evoke a sense of elegance and grandeur. It is a beacon of hope and inspiration, visible from afar, guiding weary souls towards sanctuary.
This church is more than just a building, it is a living embodiment of faith, hope and love. Through its timeless architecture, rich symbolism and vibrant community life, the church continues to inspire and uplift all who cross its threshold, providing comfort, strength and shelter in an ever-changing world
