PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

From the outset, the structural intervention required overhauling the foundation, high precision in placing the central squares, as well as the precise cutting of the existing wooden beams for the openings and double heights. The cut wooden beams either rest on the new steel porticos or lean on the lower wing of the new beams, always for the purpose of allowing the clean extrusion of the squares.
The duplex is equipped with underfloor heating with a highly efficient air-therm system.

On the ground floor, three existing paintings of Brazilian origin have been preserved, and the proposed inside circulation places them right at the stairs exit. These paintings are the reason the client, of Brazilian origin herself, initially decided to buy these two properties and undertake the project.

We don’t work with methods, we use no preconceived formulas, we just work with the space, and the space is the conjunction of material, construction, structure, light, color, texture… and thus, each new project is a new challenge.

PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

The starting point was two independent dwellings on top of each other on the ground floor and mezzanine of a modest, old apartment building between dividing walls in the heart of the Raval (Barcelona). Both dwellings were in an absolute state of neglect and disrepair.
The client's requirement was to concentrate the main living spaces on the mezzanine floor and expand them on the ground floor with other spaces with more diffuse functions that could be used as living room, study, work area...
The proposal is clear and direct: in the middle of the space, insert two 2-meter side squares rotated 45º over the dominant axis, their vertices overlapping without touching the original walls, and extruded through both floors. A simple and resounding arrangement in which two ideal shapes, two perfect extruded squares, are imposed on the existing irregularity and arrange all the floor space without the need for any other means or elements. One of the squares will hold the stairs communicating both floors, and the other will house the bedroom on the upper floor and the toilet and office spaces on the ground floor. The very rotation of these squares results in the specialization of the space around it without needing any additional doors or enclosures (except those that provide the required privacy to bathrooms and bedrooms), since the new volumes, as they approach and move away from the perimeter walls, define these areas.

The proposal's emphasis runs parallel to the sought-after inner spatial complexity and a firm intention to underplay the different areas and circulation. Thus, the stairs are enclosed in one of the volumes, and their spiral pattern aims to disorient and conceal to surprise at the landings; for the same purpose, there are multiple axes of symmetry that double up circulation and enhance the spatial experience, for example, at the landing on the ground floor with two possible exits, or all those axes that are placed at the squares' vertices; the enclosed bathroom area on the upper floor, the most isolated and private of the whole, mirrors and unfolds its negative space, a double-height empty area linking both floors; the highly reinforced top floor structure is cut off before touching the façade to reach it with a glazed floor pane, linking both floors, and thus isolating the existing façade wall, including the outer sliding carpentry are placed in that wall’s interior plane; no element touches the volumes, which are read independently inside, ending just before they touch the ceiling; lights, door knobs, shower heads, drains ... all elements replicate the 45° turn with respect to the surface where they are inserted ...
The treatment of colors and materials highlights the two extruded volumes, which are coated in glossy, gold finish paint mixed with gold powder and varnished, surrounded by white cladding (microcement and paint) covering and coating the existing perimeters. The inside of the staircase, dug into one of the volumes, is a dark world of black contrasting with the exterior whites, just as the bed area in the bedroom, excavated into another of the volumes and covered with painted OSB wood boards and varnished in black. The door frames (all glass) and openings are either brass or black steel, depending on the area to which they give access; hinges and handles are also brass or chrome ... The material and color code always matches the nature of the element where it is applied, whether existing or new, either inside the squares or outside.

PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

The project is carried out in an underground space near the sea, with barely any outside lighting and in serious humidity conditions. However, the interior of the simply-built, very small structure — barely 55m2 — had a real monumental look, presided over by two octagonal stone pillars from which domes and vaults rise to cover the space and bear the weight of the upper floors.
The client had requested the creation of an open-floor space. However, this monumentality, coupled with the shortage of natural light and view to the outdoors, led to another proposal. The single-space concept could be maintained but with greater spatial complexity, by overlapping and intersecting two living spaces: a central, common, multipurpose space and a perimeter of small designated-use rooms (bedroom, dressing room, bathroom, storage room, kitchen and study). The walls do not reach all the way up to the ceiling so the vaults and domes are continuous and visible from anywhere. But from the ground level, up to the level marked by where the domes begin, the view is partially interrupted by partitions, creating an anticipation of what lies beyond on the other side, and giving contour to the inner world. The palette of materials is reduced. Floors and walls are white to bounce and reflect every beam of light that manages to enter through the few openings. The laminated pine dividing walls highlight the items in the centre of the space, while contrasting with the white surfaces of the existing walls. This is the serene canvas against which future users will splash the colours and textures of their furnishings and belongings.

Work has been slow-paced. Lack of ventilation and openings to the outside extended drying times for materials. We had to design and build a raised floor with several layers to ensure waterproofing and insulation. All surfaces and ceilings had to be sealed with double-action waterproof mortar to prevent moisture from leaking through. The level of indoor humidity was controlled with an underfloor heating and forced ventilation system connected to a dehumidifier. Gradually, materials started drying and the saltpeter started disappearing. When we removed the worksite floodlights in early summer we found that natural light filled the space and bounced on the walls nicely, creating a very pleasant and comfortable humidity-free space which seemed much bigger than its meagre 55 m2.

PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

Project name: Casa Capitão Pombeiro
Type of project: Refurbishment and extension
Location:Porto, Portugal
Project area: 260 m2
Collaborators: Pablo Hernandez Esteban, Takafumi Soma, Ana Soares, Nikola Gronychova, Vilém Kocáb, Kamya Khandelwal
Client: Private
Fotographer: Attilio Fiumarella

The original Porto city plot, long and narrow, did show a pre-existent single-floor building that extended to the backyard, beyond the neighbor’s facades alignment.
This construction has been maintained and refurbished to host the dinner and kitchen space. New big openings were created in order to bring more light in the interior.
The handrail of the new stair has a wooden finishing and a steel structure that permitted reducing the supporting elements. In the transition between the first and second floor, the handrail creates a reference with Portuguese traditional architecture.
The suite room wardrobe hosts the indirect illumination, the two secondary rooms research good use of the scarce available space using the side wall of the wardrobe as a bed headboard. Near the window and correctly illuminated is located the study space. The windows have new interior wooden shading panels, that follow the traditional Portuguese model, create better thermo-acoustic insulation and provide an effective system to modulate light and privacy.
The attic visible roof structure is new, since the old roof hasn’t been considered sufficiently stable to be refurbished. The shape of the roof truss is defined researching a balanced combination between static efficiency and aesthetical quality, and with relation to the handrail, wardrobes and other elements present in this space.
In the pre-existent situation, the backyard garden was located 1.3 meters above the ground floor pavement. In order to get the quote a wooden steps structure has been created giving shape to a low amphitheater space for the family use.

Architecture and spirit aren’t concrete entities, but ideal concepts: architecture is to building as spirit is to living.
Human beings formulated these concepts for the pursuit of emancipation from the transience of life. We human beings yearn for absoluteness since our science doesn’t give us absolute answers.
Architecture has materiality and a spirit.
Alessandro Pepe Arquitecto is located in Porto, Portugal. Our work is constituted by 70% of residential projects. 50% of our commissions include the restoration of existing buildings. Our influences mostly originate from historical European architecture (prominently from Italy that is the place where we started our activity) and contemporary architecture, mostly from Portugal.

DESCRIPTION

'Home' is a harbor, a post station, and a lifelong refuge for people The owner of this case lives in Shanghai and is engaged in a clothing business. The male owner is also very fashionable. They pay great attention to some details in the process of creating this "home", and they don't often live in it. Therefore, the overall decoration of this home wants to be simpler and more relaxed. Therefore, we have determined that the style of his home is modern because modern style not only pursues fashion and trend, but also emphasizes functionality and comfort The closure and details of each craft, as well as the selection and placement of each sketch, can all affect the residents' perception of beauty. The overall design of this case adopts black and white elements as the main tone of the space. We use French flowing gold gray for the ground decoration of the public area, with patterns that not only look fashionable and high-end, but also make the entire space agile and not monotonous. The color scheme is made of smoked oak, slate, and art paint, with artistic decorations added to create a low-key, comfortable, fashionable and warm space, and a sense of belonging arises naturally. As designers, we We should always consider ourselves as residents, not only to create a comfortable and elegant living space for our clients, but also to provide them with a sense of stability in the space, and provide them with spiritual satisfaction and sustenance. This is something we designers should persist in doing for a long time.

PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

The entire unit is quite square, changing the layout of the original living room, dining room, and kitchen, achieving an open LDK integrated design. The introduction of light makes the entire space transparent from north to south, without any obstacles. It also extensively uses fishbone tiling to narrate, and with the interpretation and adjustment of cream color, it is fresh and clear. A practical landscape entrance is set up at the entrance, which also takes into account the storage space, and uses circular arcs to slowly transition, weakening sharp edges and corners, and easing the abrupt right angles. The fully open kitchen has become a new social center for families The guest restaurant uses a large number of log elements, and the south facing side is all made of floor to ceiling large glass, The design of the entire house without main lights makes the space lightweight and transparent, This is both a cloakroom and a piano room, so when designing a multifunctional room like this, try to leave it blank as much as possible.

PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

Fancy Lake Penthouse: The commissioned project consists of two sets of connected flat-storey apartments located on the shore of a city lake. During project communication, the owner mentioned that the residence would mainly serve as a place for entertaining friends rather than for conventional living needs. Therefore, the owner desires an urban retreat design that reflects her unique taste in artwork while maintaining a sense of beauty. As Thoreau once said, "the lake is the most beautiful and expressive appearance in the landscape." Despite the project's prime location by the lake, the original unit type consisted of two sets of office space with a chaotic layout. Multiple non-load-bearing walls divided the small rooms, resulting in a messy space that obscured the beautiful lake view. Based on the owner's family size, relationships, and actual usage of space, the design team will integrate the two houses into one, integrate fragmented space, optimize the functional layout, and adjust the landscape orientation of the indoor functional partition. The goal is to allow the space to fully absorb the beauty of the lake and natural light, resulting in a stunning super lake view flat with a wide format, ample space, full functionality, and beautiful landscape.
